Abstract: Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) allow disseminating the road conditions and information traffic to all vehicles. This information can be used by vehicles in a way to improve road safety and traffic efficiency. However, establishing secure communications and improving authentication is a real challenge against the various attacks in VANETs. After analyzing the different authentication mechanisms, we proposed a hybrid solution dedicated to ensure the authentication of vehicles and to handle DoS attacks against signature verification. This hybrid scheme provides the authenticity, the data integrity and the nonrepudiation in VANETs. As well as, we proposed different classes and dimensions of existing attacks in order to quickly identify the source of attack.
