Abstract: Low power consumption, low fabrication cost and high processing performance are the serious challenges for mobile GPU, which requires that the circuit should be designed compactly and efficiently. Rendering straight lines in a clipping frame is the basic function of graphics processing and displaying. However, conventional intersection calculation of the line and the clipping frame involves complicated arithmetic operations of division and multiplication, which not only increases the design complexity and the logical size of circuits, but also makes it difficult to achieve a high operation frequency. To solve such problem, this paper proposes a low-cost efficient hardware architecture with improved midpoint clipping algorithm in which simple adders and logical shifter are used to calculate the midpoint of the line instead of calculating the intersections with the clipping frame directly. The compact hardware implementation can achieve a high operation frequency without integrating division or multiplication units. The experiment results show that in comparison with the scheme using intersection calculation the new hardware implementation can increase the maximum operation frequency by about 8 times, meanwhile the consumption of hardware resources is reduced greatly.
