Abstract:


Macau’s economic has rapidly developed since the return of Macau in 1999. In order to target at building up an international touring city in Macau, managers in hospitality industry are one of the crucial elements contributing to this goal. The aim of this article is to examine the core competencies of effective managers in hospitality industry of Macau. Literature on the characteristics of effective management in general and in particular to hospitality industry will be examined in this paper. Due to the 24-hour and 7-day operations of hospitality industry, the requirement of an effective manager may differ. It requires senior managers to delegate authority to duty managers during overnight shifts. Good interaction and communication between managers and subordinates are also important the industry because the clearness of communication will directly influence the quality of service in this industry. In this small city, it is also a great challenge for managers to select right people for right positions as the whole society is lack of human resource in recent years. This paper provides the practitioners some insights of the key characteristics of effective managers in the hospitality industry and suggests a conceptual framework for further study of Macau’s managers in hospitality industry.
