Abstract:

The viable but non-culturable state (VBNC) of bacteria is known as a state that the cells remain viable, but are no longer culturable on standard laboratory media. This paper reviewed the specific cellular traits and gene expression exhibited by VBNC cells, their potential pathogenicity and detection methods.Based on the current status of VBNC cells researches, some future concerns in this field were put forward.
