ABSTRACT: In recent years, digital transformation (DT) projects in non-profit organisations (NPOs) are increasing in numbers but also in the diversity of the challenges they bring along for the organisations and the environment they work in. Although the aim of digital transformation may be clear to most of the stakeholders involved after at DT project approval, the implementation of DT projects face numerous challenges. As NPOs constitute a significant segment of society, uncovering some of the DT challenges remains important both in terms of research and findings on the topic. This paper initially addresses the theory of socio-technical system design (STC), within which the challenges DT projects NPOs is situated. First, we will address the motivational factors in DT. Second, we will uncover some critical project management competences such as result-orientation, personal communication among persons in charge in non-profit organisations. This will be illustrated with the example an international non-profit organisation operating worldwide. It is presently implementing a vast DT project to enhance its IT infrastructure, improve data mining and data management, facilitate the communication among its members and stakeholders at different levels. Among the major findings, the paper shows that the introduction of DT projects are more likely to encounter success if the challenges are taken into consideration throughout the project life cycle by the stakeholders, in particular the moderating and mediating roles of basic project management competences to achieve project success.
