ABSTRACT: Growing access to the internet and smartphones and social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic are related to the expansion of the online gambling market, which increases the risk of addiction for vulnerable players, but also the possibilities of controlling and preventing negative externalities and harm to gamblers. This study aims to examine mechanisms for preventing pathological gambling with reference to sports betting, considering recent changes in Brazilian legislation. Based on a literature review and documentary research and on the experience of the United Kingdom, it intends to propose improvements in Brazil’s current legislation in order to prevent problem gambling which can also be useful for other jurisdictions that face similar problems. In particular, the adoption of players monitoring algorithms is analyzed, proposing possible models and data that can be used by regulators from different jurisdictions in defining the policies and rules to be followed by companies that exploit this activity.
