Special Issue on 100th Anniversary of Insulin: Century of Evolution in Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes

The world is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the insulin invention. I am humbled by the opportunity to be the guest editor of this Special Issue “100th Anniversary of Insulin: Century of Evolution in diagnosis and management of Diabetes”. Evolution in understanding the pathophysiogy has contributed to ongoing revisions of diagnostic criteria, classification and various therapeutic modalities. Moreover recent research endeavors have also focused predominantly on prevention and ‘remission’ of diabetes mellitus, as well as possibly its cure leading to prevention or delay in onset of acute and chronic complications resulting in longer survival with healthier quality of life. Moreover, the progress continues on various fronts including lifestyle interventions, diabetes education, new drugs, devices and technological advances responsible for improving outcomes. However, unmet needs, mainly ‘cure’ remains priority for clinicians as well as researchers alike. Fortunately, I have been able to confirm contributions from expert faculty members from several institutions in many nations and multiple disciplines, including the “patient perspectives”, rendering the issue a “global” event. Finally, I wish to express sincere gratitude to the authors for their valuable contributions, my departmental colleagues for their assistance and editors for their trust in my efforts to take this challenging endeavor to fruition.
