Special Issue on Infections and Surgical Problems in Pregnancy

In pregnancy, there is an increased susceptibility and/or severity of several infectious diseases. There are several potential risk factors or causes to this increased risk including an increased immune tolerance in pregnancy, maternal physiological changes, etc. Pregnant women are more severely affected by influenza, hepatitis E, herpes simplex and malaria.

Surgery is different in pregnancy than in the nonpregnant state and there are risk factors for well-being of the fetus. Surgical problems in pregnancy should be carefully treated.
