ABSTRACT: This paper explores the relationship between inspection and research through the eyes of a person with experience of these practices. It is an account of an individual’s attempt to understand the prescriptive nature of change in education since 1988; to locate a place within that process and try to influence those factors that are changeable and minimize those that are not. Examples are drawn from the writer’s experience of combining roles in the first instance as a teacher-researcher and later as an OFSTED inspector and independent researcher.
