Abstract: With the advantages of broad bandwidth, high efficiency and all services supporting, GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) is expected to prevail as the leading optical access technology eliminating the bandwidth bottleneck in the last mile. After analyzing the GTC (GPON transmission convergence) protocol stack, the module-based method was proposed to design the GTC layer. With the 2.488 Gbit/s line rate of downstream and 1.244 Gbit/s line rate of upstream, the design of GTC layer in ONU (Optical Network Unit) was realized and implemented using the SMIC 0.13um CMOS technology.
