Abstract: The main equipments in the engine room provide power for a ship and ensure its course. The failure of these equipments is one of the main causes of serious marine disasters. In order to find out the accident chain and prevent the happening of accidents, the event tree analysis method is adopted. First the principle and process of event tree analysis are explained, then the event tree diagram of the main equip- ment failure is drawn and the failure probability is calculated, and a conclusion is made based on the acci- dent chain, and finally some recommendations are offered to help control accidents according to the result of a qualitative analysis. Being clear and well-defined, this method can effectively improve ship’s seawor- thiness and ensure its safe operation.
