Abstract: This paper extends our previous research and proposes a stable clustering mechanism, called SCM, to assist in efficient routing in VANETs. SCM is based on the passive clustering (PC) mechanism and associates three routing metrics, such as vehicle density, link quality, and link sustainability. In addition, SCM introduces a multi-metric strategy to determine the suitable participants to construct a stable and reliable cluster structure during route discovery. Simulation results confirm that the proposed SCM achieves higher packet delivery ratio and significant throughput gain than our prior study.
