Abstract: To improve the coverage area and system performance of WiMAX networks, the task group 802.16j was officially established to amend the IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.16j, specified the Relay Station (RS) and Multi-hop Relay Base Station (MR-BS). In this paper, we proposed a simulation model to investigate the performance of WiMAX relay systems. By using this model, we evaluated the probability that MSs can not be served due to the lack of radio resource. We found that the DL Relay zone allocated for the transmission between the MR-BS and the RSs affects the system performance significantly. The result can provide a guideline for WiMAX operators in the deployment of relay systems.
