Abstract: This paper aims at developing visual coverage mechanism for a Wireless Visual Sensor Network (WVSN) where a large number of sensor nodes and several camera nodes are randomly deployed. Like the traditional wireless sensor network, each sensor is capable of detecting object and reports its reading and location to the neighboring camera nodes. Unlike sensor node, each camera node has local processing and fusing image, communication and storage capabilities. This paper proposes a visual coverage mechanism which covers the following two issues: (1) Selecting the minimal number of camera nodes for cooperatively monitoring the target area; and (2) Developing a distributed lens rotation mechanism for full covering the target area. Experimental simulation shows that the proposed mechanism outperforms other schemes in terms of the number of selected camera nodes and the total rotation degree of all camera nodes.
