Abstract: For multimedia streaming services, all the random delay, packet loss, and bandwidth variation in Internet can significantly deteriorate the QoS (Quality-of-Service) of video streaming. In order to eliminate the effects of network jitter on the playout quality of video streaming, a receiving buffer is generally allocated in the client side. However, if the playout threshold is set large for the buffer, it will lead to a long playout delay. On the contrary, a small playout threshold may result in buffer underflow which will interrupt the video playback. Therefore, in this paper we propose a Dynamic Playout Threshold (DPT) mechanism which sets an appropriate playout threshold for the media player based on the estimated network jitter. In addition, the playout rate will be adjusted properly according to the number of buffered video frames. Numerical results demonstrate that the presented adaptive media playout mechanism can effectively reduce the playout delay and the occurrence frequency of underflow events.
