Abstract: A tree based index scheme for location management of objects has been proposed for a long time in the sensor network. But it still consumes much avoidable communication cost due to mobility of the object. Therefore we propose a forwarding link scheme for improving this situation. This scheme mainly is that the registration would not be issued every time when an object moves from a sensor to another sensor, so that the communication cost can efficiently be saved. Furthermore in order to explore the effect of the forwarding link scheme, we develop an analytical model based on Petri nets and derive the optimal length of the forwarding link based on this model. We also demonstrate the benefit of our proposed scheme over the original strategy.
