Abstract: In order to reduce the complexity of motion estimation in H.264, a search pattern adaptive fast motion estimation algorithm was presented through the analysis of the natural graphic sequence, This algorithm utilized the characteristic of variable block size motion estimation and the tempo- ral-spatial relation of motion vectors to predict initial search center; it well exploits the correlation be- tween video sequence motion activity and macro-block coding pattern and motion vector statistic char- acteristics to employ different patterns. Finally, the adaptive hexagonal search algorithm and the Kite-Cross-Diamond search algorithm were employed for the different patterns. The experiment shows that, on the premise of the quality of reconstructed graphics, the proposed algorithm can speed up en- coding significantly as well as meet the needs of real-time applications
