Abstract: As the energy of nodes is limited in wireless sensor networks (WSN), the methods usually adopted are reducing the energy consumption and trying to balance the energy consumption of nodes in WSN in order to prolong the network lifetime as long as possible. This paper sums up the characteristics of routing protocol in WSN, summarizes the factors that influence energy consumption of WSN and the rules that are obeyed by routing protocols, analyzes several new energy-consumption strategies, and proposes improved energy-consumption routing protocols to achieve the goal of balancing nodes' energy consumption and prolonging the lifetime of wireless sensor networks.
