Abstract: Multi-view video coding achieves higher compression efficiency by employing rate-distortion op- timization (RDO) mechanism and other new techniques. However, objective distortion metric such as the sum of absolute differences and the sum of square differences traditionally used in RDO are poorly correlated with human perception. Structural similarity (SSIM) is a new image quality assessment method, which is more consistent with human vision systems (HVS).In this paper, we incorporate the SSIM as distortion metric in the rate-distortion optimization framework, called visual perception-based rate-distortion optimization (VPRDO) algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed VPRDO can averagely save bit rate more than 12% while maintaining almost the same video quality with QP=10, 20 and 30.
