Abstract: The chitosan membranes modified with glycerol and urea were prepared by casting process. The effects of glycerol and urea content on mechanical properties and water absorption rate of the modified membranes were then investigated. The mechanism of chitosan plasticized by glycerol or urea was discussed preliminarily. The results showed that the break elongation and seam force of glycerol modified chitosan membrane could be enhanced and there was no significant change in the tensile strength of the modified membrane when glycerol content was 6%. The break elongation of urea modified chitosan membrane could also be enhanced but the tensile strength and seam force of urea modified chitosan membrane would decrease when urea content was above 30%. And there was a more significant influence on the crystallinity of chitosan when glycerol content was 4% than that when urea content was 20%. In addition, the saturated water absorption rate of modified membranes was significantly higher than that of normal chitosan membrane and increased with the content of glycerol or urea.
