Traditional process of electroless Ni-P plating on titanium alloy was improved, and the poisonous substance of hydrofluoric was not used. After the treatment of micro-arc oxidation of the TC4 titanium alloy, electroless Ni-P-ZrO2 composite plating was conducted. The effects of surfactant(LAS) concentration on the microstructure, composition, deposition rate and abrasion behavior of the composite coatings were investigated by SEM/EDS, XRF and a wear tester. The results show that when nano-ZrO2 powder is 5g/L and the LAS is arranged in 0.2-1.5g/L , with the LAS concentration increasing, the cell grains on the coating surface decrease initially, and then increase, and further decrease slightly. The P content in the composite coatings changed reversely to the quantity of the cell grains. With the increase of LAS, the deposition rate and ZrO2 content in the composite coatings increases almost linearly first, and then decrease when the concentration of LAS is beyond 1.0g/L. The wear tests indicated that the wear resistance of the composite coatings increases with the concentration of ZrO2 in the coatings, and when the LAS equals to 1.0g/L, the mass loss of the composite coating is only about 1/3 of that TC4 titanium alloy.
