Abstract: Protective micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating was prepared on pure magnesium in aqueous solution without toxic components under a constant current density. The thickness of the coating is over 30 μm after anodizing for 10 min. XRD result shows that the coating is amorphous. The corrosion resistance of pure magnesium with and without MAO coating was evaluated by polarization curve tests in SBF. The results show that the corrosion current density (Icorr) of the sample with MAO coating is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the sample without MAO coating. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the MAO coating can efficiently divide the substrate from corrosive medium and then the corrosion resistance of the substrate metal is improved significantly.
