Abstract: In order to relieve the stringent restriction on the quantity of information of a single SMS message, highly efficient Chinese text compression techniques can be applied to compress the message before being sent. In this article, an adaptive arithmetic coding algorithm in the J2ME environment, which is developed based on a statistic model for the conditional entropy coding of SMS messages, is described. The efficiency of SMS message communication is satisfactorily improved by using this algorithm.
