Abstract: A dual-band FSS consisting of regular Jerusalem cross elements was first used to study its impact on the bandwidths and operating frequencies of a U-slot patch antenna near 2.45 and 5.8 GHz. Based on simulation experience of the first part study, another FSS with modified Jerusalem cross elements was proposed to precisely improve the bandwidths and operating frequencies of a smaller U-slot patch antenna at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz for Bluetooth and WLAN applications, respectively. Simulations of the return losses of this smaller U-slot patch antenna were validated by measurement data.
