Abstract: A balun with technique of chip-type low-temperature co-fired multilayer ceramic is investigated. This balun is designed using the stepped impedance method with structure of a multilayer, meander lines, and multisection coupled lines. Due to various characteristic impedance ratios, the multisection coupled lines can shrink the length of a quarter-wavelength coupled-transmission line, and makes it very easy to match various impedances of balanced output. To design this device efficiently, a three-dimensional alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme combining with pseudospectral time-domain (PSTD) method is introduced. The numerical technique is adopted to describe the whole structure, which couples solid-state device modeling and full-wave electromagnetic simulation. Measured results match very well with the computer simulation.
