Research on the Path for College Students to Establish Lofty Ideals and Beliefs under the Background of Century-Old Party History

Abstract

Until 2021, it has been a hundred years since the Communist Party of China entered the stage of history. At the historic meeting, the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China focused on education in ideals and beliefs. In this context, publicizing red culture, transmitting red concepts, and guiding college students to establish lofty ideals and beliefs are of profound and long-term significance to the ideological and political education of contemporary college students and even to the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new period. Based on the background of the century-old party history, the article looks for the literature and materials of many domestic scholars on ideals and beliefs, explores the current situation of college students’ ideals and beliefs education at the present stage, finds existing problems and deficiencies, and finds ways and methods to solve them in a targeted manner. In this way, the ideals and beliefs of college students are strengthened, and positive and healthy thoughts are shaped, and they are regarded as a guide to action.

1. Introduction

The document “Opinions on Further Strengthening and Improving the Ideological and Political Education of College Students” issued by the central authorities has repeatedly emphasized the importance of the ideological education work of college students; the core of ideological education is education in ideals and beliefs, and ideals and beliefs are the issues of letting college students understand where they come from and where they are going, and they are inextricably linked to college students’ establishment of a correct outlook on life, values, and world outlook. College students are the main force in building a prosperous, strong, democratic, civilized, harmonious and beautiful modern power, and the mainstay of realizing the great Chinese dream. The century-old party history is a historical witness of the CPC leading the people of all nationalities throughout the country to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the crystallization of the integration of Marxism with China’s reality, the accumulation of theoretical, practical experience, and great spirit left behind by the great men of the past, and an important teaching resource for young people in the new era to establish correct ideals and convictions. College students establish lofty ideals and beliefs, the micro level is related to personal growth, the macro level is related to social stability, and even closely related to the development of the country and the nation.

Searching and sorting out the literature and library materials of domestic scholars on the education of students’ ideals and beliefs in the past two decades, it has been found that the education of ideals and beliefs is closely related to all aspects of society, but there is great research space for students’ education on ideals and beliefs with the theme of “a hundred years of party history”. At present, there are the following current situations in the education of college students’ ideals and beliefs: The leading role of student party members is not obvious; external conditions are still being established step by step, and red education is constantly unfolding; the political education environment is insufficient, and there is still a lot of room for growth. From these current situations, it can be seen that there are many problems that need to be solved in the construction of the road of college students’ ideals and beliefs: the atmosphere of school study of party history is not strong enough, the way of education has changed, the conflict of foreign cultures, and the utilitarianism of students.

In view of the above problems, this paper examines the path of how college students can establish lofty ideals and beliefs under the background of century-old party history. Second, we should use the cross-integration of multi-carrier cross-integration to enhance the innovation of education in ideals and beliefs in the century-old party history; then, we should optimize the educational environment and enhance the practical results of integrating the century-old party history into ideals and beliefs; finally, we should enhance students’ autonomy, take the initiative to establish lofty ideals and convictions in the course of studying and understanding party history thoroughly, and take the initiative to apply theory to practice.

2. Literature Review

As for the connotation and elaboration of ideals and beliefs, many scholars have different interpretations, but the essence is the same. Liang (2019) combined the views of Kang Kai and Wu Qiantao to explain the connotation and relationship of ideals and beliefs, both of which are in the category of consciousness and support each other. On the topic of the research status of College Students’ ideal and belief education, many domestic experts and scholars have studied and discussed in many aspects, connected college students’ ideal and belief with red culture, red spirit, family style and interdisciplinary subjects, made a lot of achievements and progress in the research process, and recorded the development of College Students’ ideal and belief education. Xia (2017) explored the integration means of red culture and college students’ ideal and belief education through comparison, investigation and qualitative research methods. Xu (2019) empirically proved that red culture provides rich and vivid teaching materials for college students’ ideals and beliefs. Effective use can more fully help college students consolidate the cultural foundation of their ideals and beliefs education; Wang (2018) found a new carrier of Ideological and political education for the cultivation of red song resources and students’ ideals and beliefs, so as to enhance students’ feelings of home and country; Zhang (2000) explored the philosophy education of young students and expounded the deep significance of philosophy education for students to establish correct ideals and beliefs. Aiming at different red spirits, for example, Yao (2019) takes “red boat spirit” as the research topic to study how the ideal and belief education of college students will be integrated into the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics; Many scholars of “Long March Spirit”, such as Xu (2017), have studied its influence and help on College Students’ ideals and beliefs through literature review, questionnaire survey and system analysis. In addition, with the gradual acceleration of globalization in recent years, the education of ideals and beliefs of young college students in China has attracted more and more attention under the background of the world’s unprecedented changes in a century. Feng (2021) explored the training path and influencing factors of the ideals and beliefs of the new generation of college students in all aspects by means of questionnaire survey.

Taking party history as the educational carrier to help college students build the ideal and belief framework and strengthen the red ideal and belief has also been studied by many scholars. Through the HowNet, search “party history, students’ ideal and belief” as the theme. The earliest article was discussed by Lu (2012), and the effect of incorporating party history into educational textbooks. In the same year, Chang, Yang, & Li (2012) and Hou (2012) all combined party history education with talent cultivation and classroom teaching. Since then, Qi (2018) began to study the party spirit education of college students in the new era, and Li and Liu (2019) began to systematically explore the ways of party history learning of College Students under the new form. Yin and Jiao (2021) really combined the two keywords of “party history” and “College Students’ ideals and beliefs”, took the party history education as a breakthrough to strengthen college students’ ideals and beliefs, and provided suggestions for Strengthening Young College Students’ learning consciousness and methods of grasping beliefs. Luo and Jin (2021) studied the path of enhancing the cohesion of young students with ideals and beliefs in view of the spirit of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee. However, there are still a few papers on the establishment of lofty ideals and beliefs of College Students under the background of one hundred years of party history. Chen and She (2021), who are most similar to the theme of this paper, first mentioned the “Centennial party history”, studied the profound significance of Centennial party history to college students’ ideals and beliefs, and expounded how to make full use of the resources of Centennial party history to guide college students to establish scientific ideals and beliefs. By February 2022, through searching the full-text database of Chinese journals, it was found that with the theme of “Centennial party history” and the option of “precision”, there were 78 articles, and only 7 articles related to students. Therefore, the research foothold of this paper is relatively novel.

Foreign research on China’s red culture is mainly aimed at the specific advanced cultural spirit, rarely mentioning the content of party history, which is mainly related to education, unlike Chinese scholars who can connect it with all aspects of society. Therefore, this paper mainly takes domestic literature and books as the basis to find the path for college students to establish lofty ideals and beliefs under the background of the centennial anniversary of the Communist Party of China.

3. Current Situation of Ideal and Belief Education for Chinese College Students

3.1. External Conditions of Education

One of the important contents of Ideological and political education is the education of students’ ideals and beliefs, which is also an important basis for building a beautiful society and a beautiful Chinese dream. For college students, their ideal comes from their own education before they enter the University. Huang (2018) also mentioned that the red family style is different from the traditional family style and the general family style. The red family style can enhance people’s ability to resist ideological sludge, build an ideological defense line, form good moral and political character, and is more conducive to cultivating builders and successors of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Therefore, college students bathed in the red family style are more likely to recognize and remember the party history and establish lofty ideals and beliefs.

In addition to the family, the school is the place where students live the longest. Generally speaking, the mainstream ideals and beliefs of college students in Higher Vocational Colleges and undergraduate colleges are positive, concerned about the future of the motherland, and have good morality and learning enthusiasm. However, some students in higher vocational colleges are affected by the low mood of failure in the college entrance examination, belittling themselves and weakening their ideals and beliefs (Dai, 2010).

In the context of economic globalization, from the perspective of the social environment, there has been a fierce collision and dissemination of the ideology and culture of various countries. Some hostile forces in other countries use the “public knowledge” to promote historical nihilism and fabricate national contradictions, and deliberately plan to infiltrate the culture of Chinese youth. At the same time, there has also been a phenomenon of spoofing heroic images and revolutionary works in China, which has made some college students too “Refined egoism” in the past few years, Weakening moral awareness, ignoring social responsibility, and even the corruption of life style, which has hit the educational process of the state to help college students establish ideals and beliefs. However, in recent years, the Internet era has become more and more successful, China’s hard power such as national defense and science and technology has made remarkable progress, and the world seen by students is more real, which makes the cultivation conditions of College Students’ lofty ideals and beliefs better, and students have a higher understanding of socialism and communism with Chinese characteristics (Wu, 2014). Moreover, Xiao (2018) also pointed out that students have a natural sense of intimacy to their local heroes, revolutionary memorials and local revolutionary history, and can take the initiative to actively explore and actively communicate, so as to establish a new understanding of red moral education. The red activities organized by the school will also enhance students’ understanding of party history and strengthen the correct political direction. In addition, against the background of the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China in 2021, schools and society have carried out and publicized various activities. A large amount of repeated information has also consolidated students’ cognition of party history and rooted the red belief in students’ hearts.

With the further development of the state’s red education for students, the revolutionary regions around China have been constantly updated and developed, and the more detailed party history and red traces are still little known. Meng (2019) has systematically expounded the deficiency of making better use of red culture to cultivate college students’ ideals and beliefs at the three levels of country, school and individual students. All levels should pay more attention to and invest in learning and publicizing red culture, so as to enable college students to shape correct and noble ideals and beliefs. Similarly, party history should also be integrated into various red cultures and absorbed by the public, so that students can get an excellent learning environment and cultivate positive and healthy ideas.

3.2. Educational Development Trend

According to Wang’s (2012) survey of 18 colleges and universities across the country, most college student party members have firm ideals and beliefs, clear political direction, and highly recognize the achievements made by the people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China for the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. However, the utilitarian trend of some students’ motivation to join the party is obvious, and with the continuous expansion of the group of college student party members, their understanding of communist ideals and beliefs also tends to be superficial. The college’s ideal and belief education form is single and the implementation is not enough, which leads to the diversified ideal and belief established by students, and the understanding of socialism with Chinese characteristics is still not deep enough. The conclusion of Xu’s (2017) survey is also similar to the above. Although most college students are on the right path of building socialism with Chinese characteristics in thought and behavior, the lack of political education environment a few years ago has not been made up, and there is still a lot of room for the improvement of ideal and belief education in China.

Subsequently, Zhong (2019) and Cai (2019) conducted similar surveys in 2018. Zhong Yi’s survey mainly focuses on students’ personal will. It is found that the biggest factor affecting the establishment of College Students’ ideals and beliefs is the social environment, followed by home school background and self cognition. The school has innovated and adjusted the forms of students’ ideals and beliefs education, and students have wider learning channels for red spirit and red history, but students’ own ideal situation has not changed much, It can be seen that helping college students establish lofty ideals and beliefs is a long-term and slightly difficult work. College students’ self-consciousness may form. Schools and society should seize the opportunity and not let them go astray. CAI Jie’s research focuses more on Colleges and universities. The survey also shows that schools have made progress in carrying out ideal and belief education activities and students have higher recognition, which enhances students’ enthusiasm for learning and improves the tolerance of school activities. This atmosphere has undoubtedly played a positive role in establishing lofty ideals and beliefs for college students in the future and created a solid foundation.

To sum up, it is found that the education of College Students’ ideals and beliefs in China has achieved remarkable results and has gone all the way. In the year of the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the trend of all staff learning party history is booming. We believe that the cultivation atmosphere and measures of College Students’ ideals and beliefs will be better.

4. Problems in College Students’ Ideal and Belief Education

After long-term efforts, the ideological and political education of college students in China has progressed smoothly and achieved good results. Many college students have correct and firm ideals and beliefs and have established correct values. However, this is only a phased success. Some college students still encounter many obstacles in establishing correct ideals and beliefs. It still needs the efforts of schools, teachers, students themselves and others around to jointly create a good atmosphere. Through the analysis of the problems existing in the education of College Students’ ideals and beliefs, we can take targeted measures to promote college students to establish correct ideals and beliefs and cultivate the successors of the socialist cause with lofty aspirations and both political integrity and ability for the party.

4.1. The Atmosphere of Learning the Centennial Party History in the School Needs to Be Improved

Billboard is an important carrier of campus culture. Its geographical location is superior, and thousands of students pass by every day. The bulletin board can paste the contents related to the hundred year struggle of the Communist Party of China, and vigorously publicize Marxism and the great spirit of Party building. However, the time interval between the replacement of the pasted contents of some school billboards is too long, and the pasted contents are not thematic and systematic enough. They only stay in the surface and formalization, or directly leave them idle. These situations are not conducive to students’ shaping firm and correct ideals and beliefs. In addition to static publicity, thematic activities can also be held to arouse students’ interest in learning. Generally, the activities held by schools will set up credit rewards, prizes and even bonuses. During the activities, the learning interest of participating students will reach an unprecedented high, but with the end of the activities, the students’ interest in learning party history will decline sharply. Moreover, not all students will participate in the activities. The activities on the study of party history held by the school have some problems, such as the influence is not lasting and the scope is not wide. Party history learning and education can play the role of inheriting the red gene and revolutionary firewood. It is a long process, which is inseparable from the subtle influence of strong campus culture.

4.2. The Educational Mode of College Students’ Ideals and Beliefs Needs to Be Changed

“Classroom has always been the main position for imparting knowledge in China and the main venue for moral education in Colleges and universities. It is also necessary to make good use of the carrier of classroom in the current ideological and political education” (Yang, 2018). There are mainly five compulsory ideological and political courses for college students. These courses focus on value shaping, most of which are theoretical and historical events. For most students, the knowledge of textbooks is boring, and the final exam can be reviewed intensively before the exam. Getting high marks in the course examination does not mean that one’s ideals and beliefs are scientific and correct. In some cases, it is only for credit. In the context of learning the Centennial party history, teachers need to have a certain understanding of the history of the Communist Party of China, and carry forward the precious spirit of the revolutionary martyrs of cherishing the motherland and adhering to their beliefs by quoting famous historical events in class, so as to realize the teaching results of improving students’ ideological consciousness, changing their thoughts and establishing correct scientific outlook on life, world outlook and values for students through the course, Form a good interactive relationship with students in class. College students like to touch new things, but their ability to distinguish between right and wrong is easily affected by the process of shaping their beliefs. The knowledge in the classroom is theoretical and tends to emphasize social ideals, which will make students feel inconsistent with real life and lose interest in the content taught by the teacher. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to the relationship between social ideals and personal ideals in class. At the same time, we should also pay attention to integrating theory with practice and analyzing the phenomena of real life with theory, which can not only cultivate students native land emotion and global vision, but also guide students to establish correct ideals and beliefs.

4.3. The Impact of Foreign Culture and Students’ Utilitarianism Are Prominent

China’s comprehensive strength is growing. Hostile forces in some western countries are trying to attack our socialist system and infiltrate the culture of teenagers. In the context of economic globalization, China’s traditional culture and foreign culture continue to collide. With the rapid development of science and technology, the ways to obtain information are becoming more and more diversified. Some short video apps, online games and other negative energy have weakened the leading power of mainstream ideology and seriously affected college students to shape correct values (Zhu & Zhang, 2021). We should enhance cultural self-confidence, discard dross in the ideological and cultural collision of various countries, and carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture at the same time. College is a critical period for the formation of values. Through in-depth study of party history, students are reminded of the importance of hard work, so as to enhance cultural self-confidence and establish correct ideals and beliefs. In the face of historical nihilism, we can calm down, sum up experience in the history of struggle over the past century, distinguish right from wrong, and safeguard national sovereignty. In addition to the good and bad information from the outside world, students’ own learning attitude also needs to be changed. Students generally believe that professional courses are the focus of learning. As long as other courses don’t lower their grade point or fail, they don’t have to spend too much time on these courses. Many students are too utilitarian, which is not conducive to the overall development of individuals and is difficult to become talents needed by the country. Many heroes who serve the people have given up their small homes for everyone to achieve today’s prosperous and powerful China. College students should draw nutrition from the Centennial party history, study with an open mind and guard against arrogance and impatience.

4.4. The Vanguard and Exemplary Role of Student Party Members Is Not Prominent Enough

In the University, almost every class has students applying to join the Communist Party. Nevertheless, many student party members still do not do well as vanguard models. Some student party members and cadres’ theoretical study is not deep enough, and even lack ideals and beliefs and shake Marx’s ideals and beliefs (Liu & Zhang, 2022). In the context of studying the Centennial party history, students applying to join the Communist Party of China and students becoming party members should seize the opportunity to actively participate in theme activities, listen carefully in Ideological and political classes, and use practical actions to drive the surrounding students to establish correct ideals and beliefs. Students who apply to join the Communist Party of China and become party members should be down-to-earth, dare to be first and have the courage to contribute in their daily life. Set an example for other students, show good spirit and convey correct values.

5. One Hundred Years of Party History to Promote College Students to Establish Lofty Ideals and Beliefs

Based on the ideal and faith status quo of contemporary college students, aiming at the problems and causes of integrating the century-old Party history into the ideal and faith education of college students, this paper explores the path of promoting the century-old Party history to establish lofty ideals and beliefs of college students. In this paper are logically follow under the premise of college students’ ideal faith education universal, from basic principles, a variety of carrier, college students themselves and the social environment, campus culture construction of five dimensions, explore ways to solve the problem of system, give full play to the history of the party in one hundred for huge effect ideal faith education, promote university students establish lofty ideal and firm belief consciously.

Under the influence of the social environment, college students internalize the values of role models in their hearts and externalize them in the practice of serving the society, so as to realize the effective unity of personal ideals and beliefs and social ideals and beliefs.

2) Create a good campus atmosphere, fully integrate the century-old Party history into ideal and belief education, and scientifically guide college students to set up correct and positive ideals and beliefs through professional inspiration and soft culture construction

We should constantly innovate the content and form and internalize the education of ideals and beliefs into the value proposition of college students in the new era in a more rapid and efficient way.

Again, to advance the campus theme cultural activities, should be based on the characteristics of modern college students. Let the CPC history really walked into the campus, walked into the university students in the bottom of hearts, to digest the party history theory and the ideal faith education from vivid and brilliant cultural and art activities and work. At the same time, encourage college students to go out of the campus, come to show the story of party history, spirit, in the influence and education of others at the same time to achieve self-education, to help college students firm ideals and beliefs.

Finally, colleges and universities can be through the organic combination of culture construction and environment construction, the party history factors such as banners, pictures, sculpture into daily life and learning environment, create strong red culture education atmosphere, activate the educational function of campus culture environment, strengthen the effect of young college students’ ideal faith education.

5.4. Improve Students’ Autonomy, and Establish Lofty Ideals and Beliefs in the Study of a Hundred Years of Party History

1) In order to improve students’ autonomy, it is necessary to strengthen college students’ sense of identity to the century-old Party history, so as to consciously establish lofty ideals and beliefs under the education of party history. Because the history of the party has strong appeal and fresh vitality, easy to use a variety of cultural carrier as well as the social propaganda and family cultural influence, school education and so on multidimensional system, guide students to a deeper understanding of the history of the party in the osmosis thought essence, produce strong cultural identity, thus closely combine the development of own progress and the drastic changes of the times.

2) At present, most colleges and universities in China still adopt the one-way indoctrination mode in the activities of ideal and belief education, which the educational effect cannot meet the requirements. Teachers should adopt different educational methods according to different periods and students’ personality characteristics, advocate independent inquiry learning, enhance the attraction of party history to them, stimulate students’ enthusiasm for learning, and improve the effectiveness of ideal and belief education.

3) Enhancing college students’ attention to party history education and their enthusiasm in participating in Party history activities can effectively help college students consciously establish lofty ideals and beliefs and actively practice them in practice. The centennial history of the CPC is an important record of the indelible national spirit since modern times. From the revolutionary era to modern China, the connotation of party history culture has been enriched and developed by generations, and its essence and soul has always enthusiastically inspiring people to devote themselves to practice and serve the people. College students in their daily study and life, especially need to attach great importance to the history of the party and the depth of the ideal faith education, understand the Chinese communists spirit connotation of hard struggle, forge ahead, consciously play self education. We should firmly establish lofty ideals and beliefs and internalize them as the driving force for progress. Besides, to take the initiative to learn the party history ideological education theory in social practice, actively carry out or actively participate in the party history activities, and others to achieve ideological exchanges, improve their own ability and level, intangibly again to achieve self-education.
