Special Issue on Stem Cell Therapy

Since the first-in-human transplantation of skeletal muscle derived myoblasts reported in 2001, stem cell transplantation has immensely progressed from in vitro studies to experimental animal studies culminating into clinical trials. This success story spanning over a decade and a half created a big hype and advanced the concept of therapeutic intervention from symptomatic treatment to regenerative medicine. Pioneering work of somatic cell reprogramming to pluripotency has rejuvenated a new hope in stem cell research. Efforts are also ongoing to adopt a combinatorial approach wherein stem cells are subjected to physical or pharmacological manipulation, genetic modification besides bioengineering of stem cells in order to enhance their reparability. Moreover, mechanistic studies are underway to elucidate the factors and signaling pathways that determine the fate of the transplanted stem cells.

In this special issue entitled, we intend to invite eminent researchers involved in stem cells and related areas of research to submit original researches and review articles highlighting advancements in the filed with focus on the obstacles that remain unresolved. Potential topics include, but not limited to:

• Adult stem cells
• Pluripotent stem cells including ESC and iPS cells
• Physical and Genetic manipulation of stem cells
• Bioengineering and stem cells
• Clinical studies with stem cells
