Special Issue on Automated Autonomous Vehicles: Technology Trends and Impacts on Society

Several reports released recently claimed that vehicles equipped with gasoline fueled internal combustion engine (ICE) will be gradually replaced by electric cars and, particularly by fully automated autonomous vehicles (FAAVs), otherwise known as driverless cars or self-driving cars, in the near future. In fact, the majority of car manufacturers have announced their plans to produce electric cars and FAAVs, some as early as by 2018 and the rest by 2020s. In addition, many countries, particularly in countries in EU, announced their policies on either the end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles or banned diesel and petrol cars from their roads by 2040. 

In light of these developments, the purpose of the special issue of the Journal of Transport Technologies is to shed light on the life cycles of the ICE cars and FAAVs by closely examining the development trends of automotive technologies and assessing the possible socio-economic implications to the future society of the World.

The suggestive topics could include, but not limited to the followings:

• Technologies for Charging Batteries
• Additional Demand for Electricity due to Electric Vehicles
• Technologies for Renewable Energy Production

3.      Socio-Economic Impacts of the Advancement of FAAVs

• Implications to Automobile Industry
• Impacts on Gas Station Operations
• Foreseeable Changes in Automobile Insurance Industry
• Who is liable for an accident? Owner or Manufacturer?
• Changes in Consumer Behavior on Car Ownership
• Possible Reduction of Parking Space needed and Implications to Urban Land Uses
• Impacts on Oil Industry
• Changes in Supply and Demand for Gasoline
• Changes in Reduction in Air Pollution in Urban Areas
• Impact on Urban Congestion
