 Special Issue on Gastrointestinal Surgery

The digestive system is an intricate system that can be disrupted by disease, diet and emotional stress. Some digestive diseases can be cured with medicine and lifestyle changes, while others require surgery. The largest structure of the digestive system is the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which can be divided into the upper GI tract and the lower GI tract. Gastrointestinal Surgery correspondingly can be divided into upper GI surgery and the lower GI surgery. The upper GI surgery refers to the surgery that focuses on the upper parts of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the stomach, mouth, oesophagus and duodenum. The lower GI surgery includes colorectal surgery as well as surgery of the small intestine.
