Advances in Anti-atherosclerosis Drugs

Atherosclerosis (also known as arteriosclerotic vascular disease or ASVD) is a specific form of arteriosclerosis in which an artery-wall thickens as a result of invasion and accumulation of white blood cells (WBCs) (foam cell) and proliferation of intimal-smooth-muscle cell creating a fibrofatty plaque. Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease that remains asymptomatic for decades. Atherosclerotic lesions, or atherosclerotic plaques, are separated into two broad categories: Stable and unstable (also called vulnerable). Medical treatments often focus on alleviating symptoms. However measures which focus on decreasing underlying atherosclerosis—as opposed to simply treating symptoms—are more effective. Non-pharmaceutical means are usually the first method of treatment, such as stopping smoking and practicing regular exercise. If these methods do not work, medicines are usually the next step in treating cardiovascular diseases, and, with improvements, have increasingly become the most effective method over the long term.

In the present book, ten typical literatures about anti- atherosclerosis drugs published on international authoritative journals were selected to introduce the worldwide newest progress, which contains reviews or original researches on diseases of arteries, arterioles and capillaries, vascular diseases, inflammations, ect. We hope this book can demonstrate advances in anti- atherosclerosis drugs as well as give references to the researchers, students and other related people.
